I second almost all suggestions by Mike F-6. When you have finished them you may take a look at my series. – By and large they are more tragic.
Many people (including me), but not everyone, think that “Children of Paradise” is the best movie ever made. I saw it for the first time in 1954, and I have never changed my mind about its top position.
“Blue is the Warmest Colour” is classified as a Tunisian movie, but only because the finances come from that country. All main parts are French, and they think like French people and have the kind of problems of French people. The second half may well be the most tragic movie ever produced.
“The Flowers of Kirkuk” has precisely the opposite form. The plot and situations take place in Kurdish Irak. Only the finances come from Italy and Switzerland.
