Takashi Miike: IZO (2004)

What a trip that one was, And a very cool and entertaining ride! This movie takes you to hell and back and then to hell and back again and then back to hell... its that crazy. Every single scene from the first hour is either funny, violent, weird, beautiful or all four of them. But then it gets slightly repetitive before it finishes with fidelity to its own wicked style. The music, which is an integral part of the movie is very good but again, repetitive. The sound effects were great too. Even though there is a dozen bloody fighting scenes that may appear weak on the choreography side, they all have their own vibe and feel to them that make them distinctively real and interesting. I suggest this movie to anyone who's new to Takashi Miike's work and the fans should love it.
Its my new favourite from him.

Would you say Big Bang is violent? Sexy? Romantic? Funny...?

reply

Its very violent and symbolic. Its a very odd film, quite different to Miike's other films, but has moments of romance even though its set in a prison. Its a surreal film set in surroundings unfamillar, but the story and style is so up my street. Apparently Miike calls it his masterpiece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5cyNvn2Qvg

I agree with Buxfilms. Up to now 46-okunen no koi (2006) Big Bang Love, Juvenile A is my favourite Takashi Miike film. I found it some years ago on youtube and was overwhelmed (I just checked and there is still a version on YT). Bought it then as DVD. It made me a Miike fan as far as I can remember.
There exists a US-version https://www.amazon.co.uk/BIG-BANG-LOVE-JUVENILE-A/dp/B000WZAE6S/ https://www.amazon.com/Bang-Love-Juvenile-Renji-Ishibashi/dp/B000WZAE6S/

Next best (ordered by year) are for me:
Sabu (2002) Sabu
Yasha-ga-ike (2005) Demon Pond
Ryû ga gotoku: Gekijô-ban (2007) Like a Dragon
Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) Sukiyaki Western Django
Kurôzu zero (2007) Crows Zero
Kurôzu zero II (2009) Crows Zero II
Ichimei (2011) Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai
Wara no tate (2013) Shield of Straw
Kamisama no iu tôri (2014) As the Gods Will

Izo (2004) comes far behind those above for me. So our preferences might be quite different.
