Hud is one of the best films of the year, but it can be a downer. Great performances.

Appaloosa is kind of a mess, and I say that as a John Saxon fan. Brando looks disinterested, and it keeps the movie from taking off.

Lonesome Dove? Watch it. Now. Stop reading. Go!

I reviewed Bone Tomahawk last year for the list; there are a lot of really good things about it, but it doesn't seem to be for all tastes. It deserves that 'R' rating; be warned.

Three Godfathers is a solid John Ford outing with a particularly interesting story.

Monte Walsh is well-acted and has an interesting theme; as with a number of 1970s Westerns, it can be kind of bittersweet.

Personally, I find Cat Ballou very charming and reliably entertaining, but it is a comedy first and a Western second, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Cheyenne Autumn is not only long, it's kind of a drag. Even with the Ford touch and an important and timely story, I find it hard to enjoy.

Seriously, why are you still reading this? Go watch Lonesome Dove!

HUD is not a Western, but a damn good movie, Monte Walsh (either one), and Lonesome Dove are at the top, The Appaloosa is also good.

Even if you're not the biggest Ford, Stewart, or Widmark fan, Two Rode Together is well worth a watch just for that great scene with Stewart & Widmark on the riverbank.

10fer on that!
