Friends become lovers?

Hey cineastic addicted people,

I'm desperately in need of your advice because I'm looking for a movie that has some kind of the following story line: A guy falls in love with a girl, she admirers his intellect, his caring, his indissoluble friendship, but goes on meeting the wrong guys, guys that just fancy her (she's beautiful but insecure), guys that aren't that intense like that friend, guys that are beneath her so she can't be harmed by them. But after years and years of bad experiences, when she nearly gives up hope, she realizes she's been in love with him all the time and now is brave enough to admit it.
I know that's a very common plotline, so I'm looking for a GREAT movie that tells this story, not a nicholas-sparks-version, maybe a highly acclaimed movie, really artful, deep, from a well-known director/author etc. And maybe not tooo old. ;)

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll appreciate any of them and I'll watch every movie you suggest. Thanks in advance to any cineophilic (?) out there trying to help. And please don't discuss if the recommendations are crap or great, just recommend. Thank you soo much in advance, people, and sorry for my bad english.

When Harry Met Sally (1989) features both characters as friends, dating the wrong people and eventually realizing they belong together. Writer Nora Ephron and Director ROb Reiner are both acclaimed, accomplished film makers and the lead performances are great. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098635/

I suppose you could say that the plot to Great Expectations follows this formula. It's based on a novel by Charles Dickens who is arguably one of the great writers in the English language and has been adapted to film many times. Actually the novel had two endings; the one Dickens originally intended was quite different that is most commonly used. But most film versions have the ending you are looking for. The most acclaimed adaptation is probably David Lean's 1946 film:

If you're looking for a contemporary story though, it was modernized in a film by Alfonso Cuaron starring Ethan Hawke and Gwenyth Paltrow (with a supporting cast that features Anne Bancroft, Robert DeNiro, and Chris Cooper).

I'm not really a fan of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) but I'm in the minority there. It's an acclaimed film that won several Oscars and again it utilizes this plot line so I'd be remiss if I didn't include it. It's based on a story by F Scott Fitzgerald, and the film was directed by David Fincher and stars Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and the supporting cast features Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond, and Taraji P. Henson.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421715/

Another acclaimed film that I never warmed up to is Forrest Gump (1994). It won several Oscars and was directed by Robert Zemeckis. It stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Sally Field and Gary Sinise. Again this plot line is a large part of the story so I'm including it even though I'm not personally a fan.

What ? Benjamin Button got OSCARS ? For what ? I thought the movie was extremely precitable and very boring.

I absolutely love Forrest Gump, though. Its done excellently in every part, its extremely funny and its extremely romantic and its tragic, too.

Benjamin Button got three Oscars: Art Direction, Make-up, and Visual Effects. It was also nominated for Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Editing, Original Score, Sound Mixing, Adapted Screenplay, Actor (Brad Pitt), Supporting Actress (Taraji P. Henson), and Best Picture, though it didn't win any of those.

I will give credit where it's due regarding some of the visual aspects being well done. But I'm inclined to agree with you regarding the movie. I think it's telling that what F Scott Fitzgerald felt warranted a short story, David Fincher thought needed to be a three hour epic.
