Romance is dead?

Hmmmmm......I hated the film but they are still romantic I guess. Damn akward but romantic.....

I think the problem is that guys don't like the men in romances, which limits the potential of the movies.

Other than Twilight (which I like) the second last chick flick romance I went to knowing it was a chick flick romance and going anyway (without being dragged along) was Just Like Heaven (2005). That's a long time ago. I found Mark Ruffalo's romantic lead a complete doormat, and I didn't like that the main power in the world turned out to be the supernatural force of Reese Witherspoon's entitlement. (She had to return to life and get a suitable man because she was deserving, for no reason that was obvious to me, so fate manipulated everything to deliver her Mark Ruffalo.)

In principle I really like romance, or this board would never have been on my favorites. But I need the guy to be a guy, recognizable as such by other guys, or it doesn't work.

P.S. I Love You (2007) was the last. Actually it was pretty good, and Gerard Butler had a lot to do with it. He's credible as a guy. (Actually, with what the script gave him he was too capable. I wound up thinking: "This guy could out-plan Batman and the Joker, yet Hilary Swank didn't think he was competent enough to take out a business loan. What a bitch.") But the male roles again were generally unimpressive.

Seriously, I prefer the Cullen family of twinkly vampires. At least Edward and Jacob both count as worthwhile catches, from Bella's point of view, so it makes sense that she's torn, and that motivates her.

I did not find Twilight romantic just akward and ridiculous, esp. the last part of it. My god those bed scenes and what came after.....I was sitting there in the theatre with my 13 year old drooling goddaughter and I felt plain stupid... I must be getting old :P

But on the other hand why did I feel so akward watching a shining vampire with a human girl? My favourite romances of all times are 40 Carats, Harold and Maude and Tim ( all exploring the relationships between older women and younger men). Strange and impossible for many.

I remember the time here when this board was full of life. Not anymore. Is it because its not cool anymore to be/ feel romantic?

Romance worked for men and women.

Then it became so much a matter of delivering whatever the woman wanted, with the man just being a doormat, that the guys lost interest and the genre became "chick flick" only.

Then the women, having effectively driven out all rivals for power including the opposite sex as a whole, looked around at the empty room and left too.

Now romance is a genre for children. And if the adults manage to shame the children out of a love of twinkly vampires and whatever gimmick comes next, romance won't even be for kids.

Oh I would not like to shame anyone out of their love for vampire stories. I don' t like them but as long as people enjoy them they should be made. I honestly hope romance won' t die. I want to see more of it. Stories like Bridges of Madison Country or When Harry Met Sally......

I will see the last part of Twilight tho....my goddaughter already asked me to take her to movies ehen it's out. Can' t escape it
