Stories that were adapted into 2 or more musical films and/or plays?

I'd also like to know if you have opinion on this. I mean, would you say there's something negative about turning a story into a musical after someone else has?

These are the only ones I can think of at the moment:

-THE 3 MUSKETEERS: 1 movie and 3 plays.
-ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND: 2 movies and 2 plays.
-A CHRISTMAS CAROL: 1 movie and 17 plays.
-DRACULA: 6 plays.
-LES MISÉRABLES: 1 movie and 1 play.
-PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: 3 plays.
-SHERLOCK HOLMES: 2 plays.
-THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ: 3 movies and 5 plays.

Since some of these movies were adapted into plays and viceversa, I only counted the 1st version of each musical. I also didn't count the adaptations of the those stories' sequels.

Beauty & The Beast - At least 4 musicals. (2 movie versions) (seen 2 movies - 1 stage)
It's A Wonderful Life - At least 5 stage musicals musicals. (seen 2)
The Wild Party - 2 plays (seen 2)
The Phantom of the Opera - at least 4 musicals (seen 2)
My Sister Eileen - Became "Wonderful Town" on stage, then the movie "My Sister Eileen" (different songs/music because the studio couldn't come to terms with Bernstein)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame - at least 2 stage, 1 movie

It would take some real investigation to determine the total number that originated from "Romeo & Juliet", especially if you include operas.
West Side Story
Roméo et Juliette
Giulietta e Romeo
Embedded in the overall story are subplots based on Romeo & Juliet in:
Reefer Madness
The Go-Between

Willy Wonka - If you consider the two movies musicals. And a stage adaptation.
Cinderella - how many? (I have seen stage productions of R&H Cinderella, Cinder-fella, in Singapore) there was a made for TV movie Cindy that I saw in the 70's.

Gone with the Wind - At least 2 stage musicals.
The Lord of the Rings - 1 stage and how many stage spoofs?
The Count of Monte Cristo - at least 3 stage (haven't seen any, but really love the scores to 2 of them)
Frankenstein - let me count the ways...
A Tale of Two Cities - at least 2 stage.

I don't.

That doesn't count.

If you don't count operas, it is a slippery slope as to the definition. Many consider Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera operas. Many opera companies perform "A Little Night Music", so is that an opera or a musical? What about shows like Gilbert & Sullivan or Victor Herbert operas which are performed regularly by musical theater companies?

Yeah, I know there's a debate about the difference between the two. Therefore, I decided to play it safe and go by what the majority thinks.

Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and A Little Night Music are all musicals. They, like Show Boat, Sweeney Todd, Candide, and some others, may be done by opera companies, but they themselves are still musicals.

reply

That may be true. But, the definition is fluid enough that the composer or the performers can decide what form the show will be called.

I forgot about your Alice in Wonderland, not sure what you are counting.

Stage musicals:
Alice at the Palace (with Meryl Streep among other familar faces) This was filmed I have seen it.
Wonderland musical music by Frank Wildhorn (adaptation)
Alice, a new musical (I am seeing a workshop on Sunday)

I did count WONDERLAND - A NEW ALICE, as well as the musical also titled ALICE IN WONDERLAND from 1997. I didn't know the other two.
