Help with figureing out what this movie is

Hey, I'm new to the message boards and I had NO clue where to post this so I am posting it here.

When I was two or three (this would have been '95 or '96) I remember seeing a scene in a movie that has stuck with me over the years. The problem is that while I remember the scene, I don't know what the movie was, nor do my parents.

This is the best description of the scene that I can give you: A boy about 11 or 12 was in an old house. If I remember correctly it had like potions and stuff brewing downstairs but this may not be right. Anyway, the boy went upstairs (I think he was looking for something but I'm not sure). He heard someone coming so he hides under a bed, and watches as an old man with long pointed ears (I'm pretty sure this movie was a fantasy, but again not sure)and he removes his ears (they were fake. And it may be the other way around. He may have had normal ears but removed them to reveal pointed ones) or something of that nature. Also I think there was lots of cobwebs and stuff around. Something in my mind says the boy was looking for a piece of jewelry.

Another scene that I vaguely rememeber is the boy suddenly appearing in like an attic or something, and it was pouring rain outside, and his dad comes in and hugs him or something because I think he had been missing.

If anyone knows what this may be from, or a movie close to it please let me know! Its been bugging me for years. Somebody told me that it may be Wes Cravens "The People Under the Stairs" but its not as I recently watched this movie and there was nothing even close to what I remember. Also I was thinking this movie was along the lines of the neverending story. Thanks for any help!
