Is my theory correct?
I was talking with someone about coming up with ideas for comedies. Our impulse was to come up with the craziest premise. I figured that happens to most people. I think it's wrong. While some of the best comedies had funny premises, others had more neutral premises. By that I mean that they could've been used for dramas. I think that's the formula, because when you try too hard to come up with a funny premise, you forget about the plot. When that happens, the movie will only work if the writer expands the premise, but a lot of them just stretch it.
I'll use my favorite comedies as examples. THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN is the only one that was bound to be a comedy. OFFICE SPACE, STRANGER THAN FICTION and BURN AFTER READING could've been dramas.
