Product placement and pop culture refrences a bad idea?
I'm writing a horror slasher film. It's supposed to be a little over the top and cheesy. Overall, I think I have a strong plot and character development is going great. It's takes place n modern day, so my question being the post title.
For example, in one scene a character loses a bracelet in the water and grabs their phone to retrieve the bracelet since it's water proof and has a flashlight. One characters suggest they don't take the phone. Is it a bad idea to have the character with the phone respond along the lines of "It's ok it's the Samsung galaxy note 12 and it's water proof up to 50 meters for prolonged periods of time." Does this example turn off potential readers/buyers of the script?
Concerning the pop culture references. For characters are mostly high school graduates on a vacation. Is it a bad idea to have them reference current songs. For example referencing other horror films or rap lyrics that may develop the characters more.
The thing is, i'm 27 years old. I don't hang out with 17- 18 year olds, but I've played video games online and it seems the like to reference rap lyrics a lot and associate them with real life situations so I feel I can develop a character easier doing this from time to time.
