Any ideas for this? (need a basic concept)

Hello Everyone,

Have to make a short film for my job and I can't come up with an idea if my life depended on it. I'm blocked!!!

I normally generate my own concepts but the deadline is approaching fast so I thought I'd reach out here, for something to (hopefully) stimulate me into a project I can work with. The assignment is a short film under three minutes following the theme.

The problem is... the 'theme' for this year has me stumped.

This year's theme is 'CREATE'

Can anyone offer any olive branch here?

I eagerly await your wildly inspirational responses.

Thanks!

That's a lousy, lazy theme. Seems one could interpret it to mean "I can do anything", which tends to stifle creativity. Creators need lines, rules, constraints.

'Create', bah!

How is that a even theme? You can literally do anything and justify it, although that probably isn't helping you. Just think of what you actually have to shoot: people, location etc. and taylor it to that.

I'm beginning to wonder where all the resistance is coming from. "Create" can certainly be a theme and I seriously doubt you can do "anything" to justify it. After all, I'm suspicious of the idea that you could make one about a serial killer, and then say "See. I created it, so it fits the theme."

But that's just me. I get that it's pretty broad - however - most themes are. I doubt anyone would be picking a bone if the theme was "death," but to say that "death" is any narrower a theme than "create" would be disingenuous at best.

There's no such thing as the establishment. Everyone knows that!

What about the guy who kills people to observe the grief of those that loved them? That fits the bill. It's a crappy theme.

reply

Even if that were true (I don't think it is) You only addressed one side of the point I made, if the theme was "death" you wouldn't say anything.

I agree it is a 'lame' (or strange) theme. I can't really wrap my mind around it. Last year the theme was 'collaborate' and I'm sure I could've come up with several plot ideas for that. But this year? I'm stumped.

I agree with you guys that it's too broad.

All I need is a log line or general 'beginning middle end' concept, then I can begin building scene ideas and start shooting.

Thanks for the input so far. Hope to hear more from you guys. I still have a few days before the entry fee is due.

Maybe the fact it's so broad and vague is a good thing. If it forces you to dig and scrape and reveal and find in order to discover your take on it, then you've had a load of exercise before even really beginning to write it.

So brainstorm. Cluster. Make lists, use all the tools you need in order to surface that kernel of inspiration.

I think it's a very poor choice of theme, but it's not my contest. Go make the most of it anyway.

edit: and DO NOT use the first thing that comes to mind. With a theme like this, the first thing that comes to mind will come to many minds, and you'll find yourself doing what everyone else does. Go deeper and further.

If you are struggling coming up with a "What" for your concept, you could always try starting out with a "Who". Who are examples of people that "create"? {Artists, architects, builders, children, etc.} You could pick on of those to build around and go from there.

Since you only need to fill three minutes, this really shouldn't need to get too complex.
