how much do you write every day?

or do you only write when you get an idea?

I kind of suck. This post is the most I've written today.

I'm not consistent, not at all, but I write four or five days a week. Some days, I'll write all day. Other days, it could be a half hour.

Since I am not trying to break into the business and no contract specifies when I have to have a finished work product, this works for me.

What I don't do is write only when The Muse inspires me. If I waited for that b!tch, I'd never have finished anything.

I write most every day. I try to hit at least 500 words.

I only write when I have something to write.
The rest of the time I think a lot about what I will write next.

During writing period, I don't even write every day, sometime I prefer to let the story grow in my mind, and explore possibilities. I usually sit at the desk when I know exactly what I'll write, and when I have a more or less precise idea of what the scene will look like.
I like to give the characters some room. They have ideas too.

I do outlining, research, a few drawings sometimes, plans of rooms or house floor, to know where the characters can move to, how long it takes... what can they see or not see from their place.

When the setting is clear, the characters a defined, often everything clicks and find its place.

More than I want to. Not as much as I need to.

Not even close to enough. Anyone on this thread want to make another thread where we hold each other accountable? My biggest issue besides having to pull anything I need out and put away SEVERAL TIMES A DAY is that no one around me takes me seriously and it's been so long, I guess, I do not take my work seriously enough. I'm ready for a kick in the a$$-it's been a long time since I have been paid to write/been paid for my writing.

You could certainly start a thread in which people report meeting their own writing goal for that day. If it were me, I'd make it optional whether they share what that goal was. Whether people will participate, who knows?

As December/January is my dead season, I usually try to set aside a week for heavy writing. I use a spreadsheet with page counts of my various projects and update those numbers daily to produce daily and overall totals of new pages written. It makes for a nice driver to dig in and lets me know how much I could be writing. When you find you can do 60+ pages in a weekend, that puts paid to many excuses.

It might be nice to have an STW week where people do something like that, reporting as they feel appropriate.
