Did Bones ever drive anyone else crazy?

It happened again on an episode I DVR'd yesterday, The Paradise Syndrome. Kirk, loses his memory and is left on the planet and marries the Native girl while Spock and the Enterprise rush to deflect the asteroid that will eventually destroy the planet. As soon as Spock is in charge Bones is right there in his ear bitching about everything he does or doesn't do. This must be part of their chain of command procedure or something. Kirk always has Spock with him to talk over situations and possibilities, Spock is always there with him discussing things. Maybe the regulation is that when Spock is in command that he must have another officer present to give alternate options and McCoy is his assigned command partner. Oh, how I wish it were Scotty or someone else. McCoy is immediately ever present, always standing next to Spock and endlessly bitching and complaining every single moment in which Spock is temporarily in leadership. I wish Spock would just give him the Vulcan neck pinch so that I could enjoy a scene in peace.

This may seem strange to you, but I actually like Dr. McCoy, and consider him my personal most likable Star Trek character, even if he may not be my absolute favorite character of the series (Either Kirk, Data, or Picard). Among the Enterprise crew, he seems to be the sort most relatable and down to Earth; less standoffish and distant compared to other senior officers of the ship. He's an old fashioned countryside doctor at heart, in a drastically different environment. In fact, although I identify more with Spock's logical approach to life, generally, Dr. McCoy's different breed of pessimism, mixed with incorporating more emotional feelings to his decisions, is also endearing. I just can't help but like the guy, a warm gentleman, while I admit to finding Spock quite cold and distant in comparison, even though I am more of that type, myself.

It's OK to think differently about the characters of the series. There are probably a lot of Star Trek fans that don't particularly care about, or much for Bones.

I loved Bones. He was sarcastic and the show needed that comic element.

I read what you said and I don't think it really addressed my point. You basically just told me you liked Bones and described his personality to me and gave me a description of his character.

My point was him sticking by Spock's side and bitching at him endlessly when Spock is in control.

Bones can be all of these traits you enjoy so much and he can continue being the "old fashioned country doctor" but he can be them in SICK BAY. My comment about him applies to the concept of him always leaving sickbay and hanging out on the bridge whenever Kirk is away and bitching in Spock's ear and criticizing everything Spock does or doesn't do when it is his turn to make decisions.

I'm interested in seeing Spock's style and if he makes good decisions when it is his turn to lead instead of Kirk. These scenes are ruined for me because Bones doesn't stay in sick bay but is always parked at Spock's side when Spock is in command. He never shuts up and just bitches and complains about Spock and endlessly attacks him personally. He acts as if he hates Spock.

I wish Bones would stay away from Spock when he's in command. I'd rather Scotty be there.

You basically just explained to me you like Bones and described him in general, giving me an overview of his character. I'm only discussing the very specific situation in which Bones stays glued to Spock's side whenever Spock temporarily has control of the Enterprise and just bitches and bitches and bitches at Spock and never shuts up.

Bones might be ok when he's with Kirk or when he's with Scotty but he's annoying as hell when he's with Spock and every time Spock is in charge Bones never leaves his side and never shuts up.

I don't understand why Bones always shows up when Spock is in command. Dude, go treat a patient or something. Let Spock think for a moment. He criticizes everything Spock does.

Yep, I understand what you're saying. At times it's funny, at times not. An example is "Arena" when Kirk is taking off the ship and placed on some planet to fight the Gorn. "The captain is out there. What are you going to do about it?" two or three times. The ship has no power, Spock can't communicate with the aliens, he has no idea in what part of the universe Kirk may be... but Bones (whom I also love 99% of the time) goes on and on and on and...

A Vulcan neck pinch might have come in handy at those times.

I always saw McCoy as a bit of a stereotype. The racist Southerner. A compassionate man, but he just couldn't get over the fact that Spock has green blood, pointy ears and a different philosophy of life.
