Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
Is Better Call Saul a satisfying prequel to Breaking Bad, or not what you hoped it would be?

shareI like Better Call Saul very much, but thinking of it in conjunction with Breaking Bad is almost...I wouldn't say pointless, but I think it can give people the wrong idea, because it is pretty different. Remove the characters we know from BB and you'd pretty much have an entirely different show.
The first season was a bit wobbly, but man, I thought the second season was absolutely stellar! It took me a bit to get used to what I was seeing and shake off those BB expectations, but Gilligan and Co. have just crafted really great characters to watch and don't seem to be coasting on our past love and reverence for BB and seem intent on making this stand on its own. I appreciate that.
I look forward to the new season, it feels like it's been so long!
I didn't have high hopes, because we all know how spin-offs usualy go. But I was pleasantly surprised. The show's really come into it's own, it's doing its own thing, so I don't even compare it to BB (in terms of story).
I like how they've expanded Saul's character, and turned him from comic relief into a complete person.
I also like how they've basically replaced cooking meth with shady lawyering :D
I'm interested to see how they're going to end this one, because we already know where Saul's decent leads him.
I wanted to like Better Call Saul because Breaking Bad was such a classic show but I just couldn't get into it, seems kind of pointless. Ratings dropped a lot after the first episode so I guess many others people feel the same way. Breaking Bad started off slowly but ratings kept growing over time.
I think the ratings drop-off was due to some BB fans sharing your feelings.
BCS is a different show with it's own feel and pace, but sharing some of BB's storyline and characters. Some BB fans, like me are OK with the difference, and enjoy BCS on its own merits.
I hope the show keeps going for a while. I'd predict some dissatisfied BB fans might return after Jimmy changes fully into the Saul identity, and probably has more dealings with the criminal element from BB.
I'm in no hurry for the transition to be complete.
I think Better Call Saul is excellent. Bob Odenkirk is outstanding. I think he's perfect in this. The tone is quite melancholy. Really funny, but sad.

Unfortunately I did not watch BB. But Better Call Saul is excellent.
