Green Acres Is The Place To Be
This series portrayed itself as a reverse of The Beverly Hillbillies, yet like the Clampetts there are times the shows writing went above and beyond the comedy to make some statements.
Exodus To Bleedswell for example pointed out the results of government deals and influence on people who are often helpless to stop it. Then in the same show they point out what political corruption can do.
The Hooterville Phone Company pointed out how useful Government is in keeping public utilities running verus how badly private enterprize could screw it up.
The ultimate one is where Oliver Douglas the lawyer finds a loophole in the property taxes all the farmers pay on their farms being illegal and asking for a rebate. The government sends all the farmers their money back, and then starts billing the farmers for all the bridges and roads they had built in the area.
There are times this show was far from being just funny, and perhaps the clue of what was to come was when they enlisted John Charles Daly of What's My Line to introduce the pilot. There is more intellect here than initially meets the eye.
A Smile is priceless and Can Be Addicting
