What is considered a classic film?

What is considered a classic film? Is it the age? And if so, how old? Say, pre-1980? Would the age standard change as the decades roll on? In other words, do you think a movie from the year 2000 (such as Lord of the Rings) would ever be considered a classic, and thus would be worthy of discussion on this sub-board?

Interesting question.
A pre 1980 film would be almost 40 years old.Perhaps pre 1990?

When I think of Classic Film, I think of the era that went up until the breakup of the studio system...which I guess was roughly in the early 1960's.

I think the real dividing line (in my head, anyway) is the 1970's....that is when we really saw much more of a widespread independent vibe coming into even mainstream, studio produced films.

Netflix etc. will create categories of "Classics"...but they really just seem to mean "older titles you've probably heard of."

Most of the classic films are older films, from the 50's, 60's and 70's.
