Misleading Film Titles

Often, a punchy title will draw your attention to a film, without any prior knowledge of the story.Film noir is a perfect example of this.Snappy titles such as Detour, Impact, Raw Deal, Cornered, Dark Corner etc let you know that you are going to watch something hard hitting, mysterious. Then, there are ironic titles, and the relevance only becomes apparent once you are immersed in the story.Fair enough...but then there are those which lead you to think you are in for a certain type of ride, only to be led somewhere very different...

Hell Is Sold Out (1952). Herbert Lom, Richard Attenborough, Mai Zetterling. What sounds like a dark thriller, or even horror is in fact a light, rather jumbled romantic drama. The title refers to the book written by Lom's novelist character.

Carnival (1947) suggests a frothy, colourful Musical comedy, but is in fact a rather dark period drama.

Undercover Girl (1959). While this one does suggest some sort of thriller, which it is, there is no 'undercover girl' in the entire film.Terrible film, by the way.

Seven Sinners (1936). A wonderful light thriller about train sabotage. Excellent film, but the relevance of the title is totally beyond me.

The Brain Machine (1954). The title suggests some sort of 'Mad Scientist Sci- fi', but is actually a very good, dark thriller with Maxwell Reed as a man out for revenge.
