ATM: The Turin Horse (2011)

I'm a sucker for cinematic language and this is one that speaks volumes. Bela Tarr's self-proclaimed final film. Not for the average movie goer, but I promise you'll be better for having endured it. Stark and beautiful. Discuss.

Wow. That's an interesting choice, Kazak. It scored a 7.8 on IMDB, and received mixed reactions from critics.

I have not seen this film, but I did see his 2000 film Werckmeister Harmonies, but that was several years ago. It was odd, interesting and somewhat depressing. It was also a bit difficult to follow and understand. I think my basic reaction was confusion. I may have to do some more research on that.

PS I'm storm chasing, and will return home on June 1.

Me neither, so it should be an interesting watch.

Set during a seemingly endless storm (which MovieManCin2 would probably appreciate) and to an intermittent haunting and repetitive riff, The Turin Horse show the bleakness and hardship of life for a disabled father, daughter and their sick horse, with a daily grind of dressing and undressing into many layers of clothes, collecting water, stoking the fire and subsisting on a diet of boiled potatoes.

Filmed in black and white amid a stark landscape, there is very little dialogue, with the exception of the occasional visitor, preferring instead to display the visual brutal reality of the family's plight, which eventually forces them to attempt to move away, with horse in tow and their possessions in a small cart, due to dwindled resources.

This movie gives you a great appreciation of the ease of life we have now and the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Personally I think it dragged on a little too long at almost 2.30 hours, but I can appreciate why it was so long for getting it's point across.

Yes, I probably would. We only saw one tornado in 11 days, and had to leave while it was still active. Still trying to figure that one out.

Welcome back. Shame it was not a great season for you, but at least you got to see one.

Thanks, it's great to be back. It was kind of boring, and I felt bad for the newbies. I've seen 30 tornadoes, but they only saw one, and we left that one early.
