ATM: The Fall (2006)

This is one of my favourite films ever and I never get bored of watching it.

The storyline, acting and the cinematography are just fantastic.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER FOR THE FILM AS IT GIVES TOO MUCH AWAY AND SPOILS THE EFFECT OF SEEING IT IN THE FILM ITSELF.

An excellent choice, keybored.

I saw this film on DVD about a year ago. It's quirky and funny, and definitely not your run of the mill film, and I loved it.
This was the first time I had seen Lee Pace. He was excellent in this, as well as in Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies.
These were two excellent TV series which unfortunately were short lived due to the pinheads at the respective networks.

And the little Romanian girl, Catinca Untaru, was charming in her first of three (so far) film roles. According to her bio, she told her grandparents that she would like to be a theater actress waiting for people to give her flowers on stage. I loved how her imagination would "misinterpret" various parts of the tales which Roy told her.

No spoilers, but I also enjoyed the ending. I give it an 8/10.

PS I'm leaving today for OKC for a storm chasing trip. I will return very late on May 31. In the meantime, have fun!

Having recently reacquainted myself with both The Fall and its original (Yo ho ho) I can’t help but compare the two.

The Fall is beautiful. The locations are just stunning, the costumes are amazing. The performances are very good. The little girl is adorable and very natural. It showed that there was a fair amount of improvisation in the hospital scenes, between her and Lee Pace. And if I look at it as its own thing, the story is good enough.

Where The Fall doesn’t stack up is in the parallels between what’s happening in the hospital and what’s happening in the fantasy story. Those should have been developed more IMO. And as a whole, it leaves me wanting more emotionally. As it is, it’s a beautiful collage of stunning imagery build around a pretty bare scaffolding.

To be continued...

Sorry for being one of those people, but I’m gonna talk about the original. What’s happening in the hospital and in the personal lives of the characters informs the adventure story a lot more. And it’s also something that the two main characters bond over in real life (it’s a little boy in that version). The two men that share a room with the Actor are also much more involved. The “bad” one provides an antagonist in the real world, as well as being the villain at the end of the story. As a whole it uses the parallels between the hospital and the fantasy world a lot better.

As far as remakes go, this is an excellent example how you could take a story and retell it in a different way. It’s not really a beat by beat retelling of the original, and it improves on the visual representation of the fantasy world (which was basically limited to a boat, a beach and something like a castle in the original). And it shows that it was a passion project, and not just a cheap rip off (like most remakes). You can watch both movies and get something different out of both of them.

So I prefer The Fall for it gorgeous visuals, but Yo ho ho for the character development.

Again, sorry for going into the whole comparing business.

I haven't been able to find Yo ho ho with English subs, but I would like to see it sometime.

I looked around the local subtitle sites, but no luck :(. Looks like even the "dark side" hasn't gotten around to translating it. I'll keep my eye peeled, thought.

That would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't seen it, but it looks really interesting. I hope to see it sometime soon, if I get the chance.

It is an amazing film and one worth owning.

Like Bladerunner, it is one of those rare films that you never tire of seeing because everything about it is just so well done.

Glad you liked it. I thought you might.

The stories of the people around make more sense when you have viewed it a couple of times and know who they are and what role(s) they play.

Shame she didn't pursue her acting career as she would have been an asset to any to movie.
