What did you watch this week? 02-05-17 to 02-11-17

I always wanted to do that so don't hesitate posting here too and I'll try and answer to everybody.

Much love y'all, will miss you.

Mine:

Jingle all the way (1996 DVD): I remember that I found this movie awesome when I was 11 years old and 20 yrs later it was still good, funny and entertaining. It's over-the-top a lot but done in such a way that it never becomes too silly except maybe for the "flying" part, that last a minute so, who cares. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Christmas, toys, bombs, parades, mean Santa's...What more can a boy want? 7.5/10

Third person (2013 Netflix):"Three interlocking love stories involving three couples in three cities: Rome, Paris, and New York."
Directed by Paul Haggis, starring Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kuniz, James Franco, Adrian Brody.
I'd say that it's almost as good as Crash although it took me two viewings before really loving Crash and this one I digged the first time. I wouldn't say that there's a big twist at the end because the title and the trailer spoils it and even without that the hints in the beginning of the movie pretty much tells you what's actually happening. The guy says it right off the start, he's writing about a man who can only lives through his characters...Then we see deferent characters. Anyhow, the way they wrapped up the movie was very well done. The acting was good and there were so many elements in the story that I could relate to, it just made it better. (Especially the Adrian Brody
part) 7.5/10

Big hero 6 (2014 Netflix): A very well made Walt Disney/ marvel comic/superhero/robot/family/ animated movie. It's entertaining and even touching but the last 30 minutes was a bit weak what with the full on, non stop action. The animation was really stunning. 7/10

Only lovers left alive (2013 bluray): The cinematography was good, the settings were quite interesting, the music was great with some people upsychedelic guitar and some good rock. My only warning is, don't watch this movie if you're even slightly tired because there is not much happening in the first hour and it was a bit of a bore. We quickly get the point that they are very old and have a lot of knowledge and life experience and are hiding from a changing world but it becomes a bit redundant and it's not like, over their 4 centuries on earth, it's the first time it happens. The second half is better but overall I think the screenplay was the main weakness. I feel like the movie simply scratched the surface of a possibly deep subject. I had certain expectations for this Jarmush joint and unfortunately, I'm a bit disappointed. 6/10

Gnomeo and Juliet: For some reasons, I always stayed away from this movie, only to find out it's filled with ingenuity, it's funny, clever and the action is good. A lot of colorful characters, a simple but effective storyline, some good jokes, I enjoyed it throughout, or thoroughly, or both. Not sure. 7.5/10

Y tu mama tambien (2001 bluray): OK so the first few minutes of this was literally teen porn and Later on, there's a scene of the two boys jerking off at the pool, topped with a close-up off the sperm dropping in the pool. Not the kind of image I'm looking for but The goal was to provoke an they sure succeed. But if you stick with it, you're in for a little gem of a movie. Really. The main quality is that it feels so realistic and genuine. It's like the director just told the actors "OK, so do whatever you would do in that situation. Action!" It's the same thing for the background action. Everything that happens on the screen seems like it's just real people doing real things. When the movie is over you feel like you just traveled to Mexico, it's amazing. The editing and voice over were very original, liked it a lot. The narrator provides countless random off-screen details that you just end up craving for. Overall, it's very sexual but also passionate, it's a wonderful road trip drama that takes you an exotic voyage. Although I wished it last a little longer because I loved it so much, I'm sure any movie lover can tell that the ending was rushed. It's too sudden too abrupt . Still, I'm very glad to add this to my collection and will rewatch it many times I'm sure. 8.5/10

The three musketeers (2011 Blu-ray): This one's been bashed by both the critics and the people so let me swoop in with my cape and sword to defend it. Yes, if you want to professionally analyze this movie in every single details you'll find its badly flawed. But as I sat on my couch and watched it, I was entertained and that's what's important to me. The special effects and action are awfully nice, The acting and dialogs are laughingly awesome, The script is terribly fun and cliché, the one-liners are perfectly cheesy and the ending was impressively over the top. To start with, I have weaknesses for Jovovich and Waltz that I both loved, Orlando Bloom was pretty good but I didn't like the guy playing Athos. The movie is almost 2 hours and it went by very fast. And the cinematography really is nice. 6.5/10

Max Payne (2008 DVD): The movie sure had a few redeeming qualities:
- the snowy city
- the slo-motions
- the shotguns
-
... That's about it.

Seriously, this must be Mark Wahlberg's worst movie. (I think Clive Owen would've made a great Max Payne even though I don't like him particularly) Plus, I already struggle when I see "Jackie Burkhart" in comedy movies, in this it just didn't work for me. As for the game, I used to be scared *beep* when I played it in my parent's basement and I loved it, so I knew I should've stayed away from this movie because it was only PG 13 and the trailer sucked. Then I
saw the DVD for one box at the used store and Decided to check it out. It sucked. The crazy-dark-scary-psychedelic vibe from the game was not there at all and the plot was a disjointed, boring and predictable mess. 3/10

Children of men: I am discovering this director and I am just amazed by him. The way he shoots the scenes make them feel so real it's scary. I went into this one blindly, as I never watched the trailer, and found myself glued to my seat as it unfolded marvellously. Every single thing that happens on the screen has an effect on me. From the acting to the story to the cinematography (oh! The cinematography!) everything was pretty much flawless. I had heard a lot of praises about this movie but always had my doubts. I was wrong and they were right. It's gripping, breathtaking and unique. Un chef-d'oeuvre mon ami. Right up there, underneath The Pianist. 9/10

The golden cane warrior (2014 Netflix): A standard betrayal and revenge story spiked with a fortuitous love but it's one of the finest Indonesian movie I've seen. Well made with Beautiful sceneries, especially in HD, and the actions scenes were decent. The cast was solid, especially the young actors. 7/10

Michael Bolton's big, sexy Valentine's Day special (Netflix 2017): I know some of the songs but never was familiar with the guy and could've never put a name on his face if I was asked. This started to play when I opened up Netflix and decided to give it a chance and ended up watching it all and having some good laughs. The people are funny as are most of the sketches. 6.5/10

Documentary:

Placebo: Soulmates never die (2003 24mins): Friday night I was feeling pretty groovy and decided to pop in one of my favorite music DVD. Only to realize that I never had watched the documentary that was on it. It was just awesome, the happiness on my face gradually increased until one point where I had a big whole smile that didn't want to leave. They truly are one of the greatest band ever. My second favorite after a band you might know by the name of The doors. if you never heard of Placebo, I strongly suggest you check them out. you will either fall in love or dislike it. 10/10

Of yours, I've only seen three. My ratings for them are as follows:

Big Hero 6 - Really liked this movie. It was funny and I was pretty surprised that it had a dark beginning. The animated city of San Fransokyo was stunning to look at, and brought back good memories of going to college in SF - 7/10.

Y Tu Mamá También - I haven't watched it since it came out on DVD but do remember enjoying it. The three leads were terrific, with Gael García Bernal being my favorite - 8/10.

Gnomeo & Juliet - I didn't find the idea of recreating a Shakespeare play with those characters interesting. I also noticed that the voice actors didn't seem to memorize their lines (I could tell sometimes that they were reading out loud). It was slightly entertaining, but that's it - 4/10.

I only watched one movie this week, which was:

Bone Tomahawk: One of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile. I'm so glad I watched it alone, with the lights out, because I got really into it. I love slow-burning horror films, and didn't find the first two acts boring, like some people. Kurt Russell never fails to entertain me in a western or horror movie, and it was a treat getting both here. The infamous gore scene was very intense. I thought about the ending all weekend after watching BT Friday night - 8.5/10.

I actually thought that the voices were great for Gnomeo and Juliet.
As for bone tomahawk, I have my doubts about it but you just tempt me to watch it a bit more.
