When I think of the term "Movie Star," I don't necessarily think the greatest actor/actress. I'm thinking more along the lines of "Who can we put in this film, and almost guarantee success?" So, it's probably someone who has quite the box office draw and almost universal appeal for the time they performed in. So, I hereby nominate: John Wayne. Not exactly my favorite actor, but, probably the closest to the "Biggest movie star of all time."

Probably Charlie Chaplin, all things considered - popularity in his heyday, legacy, earning power, iconic status etc. His impact was and remains huge - I don't think anybody else can really challenge him.
