5.Last Samurai
It's a really solid movie. I don't particularly think it's even close to his best performance, but the film isn't in a rush, and it's beautifully shot.
4.The Outsider's
He didn't have the biggest role, but I'm a sucker for a greaser flick. And the film is just so hard-hitting.
3.Rain Man
Defo one of his best performances. Very subtle and power emotions going-on in this one.
2.The Color of Money
He was PERFECT for that role at that time!
1.Collateral
Well, first I'm a huge Michael Mann fan, and this is one of the director's and actors best
I enjoy several of his movies and performances.
I'm only rating the movies he was in, not the performance.
1. Magnolia
2. Collateral
3. Born on the Fourth of July
4. Eyes Wide Shut
5. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation / Minority Report
Check out my profile, proceed at own risk.
1. Eyes Wide Shut Kubricks last film is a near masterpiece of tension, paranoia, moral battles and distrust. Only marred by a laughable performance by Nicole Kidman
2. Collateral another great crime film from Michael Mann, Tom Cruise being this villain with grey hair and a grey suit was a masterstroke.
3. Vanilla Sky Great remake of a good film, a richer deeper experience and a superb casting of Cameron Diaz as a *beep* crazy person. Cruise has plenty of great scenes too and is put on a pretty crazy roller coaster.
4. Interview with the Vampire Tom Cruise's first time as a villain and he is excellent. He turned around the opinion of the skeptical Anne Rice on this one too.
5. Jack Reacher there were quite a few going for the 5th spot, top fun with that soundtrack and homoeroticism or one of the latter Mission Impossibles or Edge of Tomorrow for popcorn throwing fun.... but I will go for Jack Reacher because of that awesome car chase :)
5. 'Top Gun' It doesn't age well, and it gets tedious at times, but once in a while I have to sit down and re-watch this. Still a classic in some respects. Worth it to me.
4. 'Rain Man' Amazing movie all around. Great performances from Cruise and Hoffman. I need to sit down and watch it again, I haven't for so long.
3. 'Jack Reacher' Cruise's true bad@$$ nature is shone in this. Rather than just be another 'Mission: Impossible', Reacher's adventures seem to be a little more grounded, more of Cruise's Jason Bourne/John Wick character than Ethan Hunt is. He makes lines that would sound cheesy sound threatening and real. I can't wait for 'Never Go Back' and will be seeing it this weekend!
2. 'Collateral' Almost underrated, or at least not often mentioned. His best performance to date, a very re-watchable movie with very little mistakes.
1. 'Rock of Ages' Yeah, sue me. The movie is dumb but fun, and Cruise knocks the flip out of the role of Stacee Jaxx. Ethan Hunt and Joel and Maverick may be his most famous characters, but he was born to play a rock god.
Close Calls:
'Mission: Impossible III/Ghost Protocol/Rogue Nation' I think it's safe to say that once Cruise and JJ Abrams got more creative control on this franchise, it has been picking up and getting better and better with each installment. MI6 is on the way, so I guess they're not slowing down anytime soon!
'Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow' My buddies and I had a surprisingly good time with a movie we were expecting to find stupid. The third act is a little underwhelming but if you can keep up and suspend disbelief, the first and second acts are a thrill ride.
"We're not too old for this sh*t!" -Riggs and Murtaugh, 'Lethal Weapon 4' (1998)
Eyes Wide Shut - a masterpiece that gets better with each viewing. Great performances, excellent cinematography, terrific music choices, and a layered story.
Magnolia - a magnificent ensemble piece that is an emotional roller coaster ride. The three hours fly by and it also features Cruise's best performance.
Collateral - a great crime thriller from Michael Mann with a terrific plot and one of Cruise's best performances.
Top Gun - amazing soundtrack, cool action scenes, and just a lot of fun.
Vanilla Sky - I love movies like this that make you think. The cast is great, good soundtrack, and a very interesting plot.
Struggling to cut it down to 5, but...
5. Tropic Thunder - not your typical 'Tom Cruise film' since he isn't the star, but I couldn't leave out one of my favourite comedies, and his performance is part of the reason why.
4. Jerry Maguire - A truly touching film with one of my favourite romance quotes - plus he has a scary resemblance to my boyfriend in this one, which makes it even more entertaining.
3. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Just plain fun with some amazing stunt work, great action scenes and hilarious gags.
2. Rain Man - Obviously I couldn't leave this one out. It is an emotional roller coaster with one of the most intriguing and entertaining characters I've ever seen in a film.
1. Collateral - A personal favourite for me. Tom Cruise is rarely the bad guy, but this proves he's more than capable of being one. With a great cast, twists and turns, chases and action sequences, Collateral tops the list.
"No more dead bodies for daddy tonight"
1. Collateral- Very different work for Cruise, playing an antagonist and a nominated worthy performance.
2. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol- Best Mission Impossible effort to date.
3. Interview with the Vampire- No matter how hard Brad Pitt was trying to be lead on this one, the award goes to Lestat, great character by Cruise.
4. Minority Report- Intelligent thriller with great plot, message and good acting.
5. Jack Reacher- Awesome underrated performance and movie by Cruise.
Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere
Magnolia, Rain Man, The Color Of Money, Risky Business, Taps - because he had good co-stars who could carry Cruise throughout the films.
