Best surprise ending

What are your top five surprise endings in any film.

Mine (by yearly order):

1. Witness for the Prosecution (1957) = Best courtroom drama ever made. It helps that it has the best twist ending of any courtroom drama ever.

2. Seconds (1966) = It's not unusual among the fans of this film to say anyone who is used to The Twilight Zone should find the ending to this film predictable, but I'm glad to admit even after watching many episodes of the TV series, I still did not see this punch to the gut coming. I guess the effect could be likened to watching the ending of To Serve Man for the first time. Perhaps the cruelest twist ending ever put on a Hollywood film.

3. Deep Red (1975) = May be the cleverest and the most daring twist ending ever applied to any horror film. Twist endings are nothing new in the films of Dario Argento, but this one is bold even for him, easily the boldest trick he ever pulled on his audience.

4. The Vanishing (1988) = Not necessarily the smartest or the most surprising of twist endings, but the only one I'd argue to rival the bleakness of the ending to Seconds.

5. The Sixth Sense (1999) = It's hip today to call the ending predictable, but when I watched it the first time back in 1999, I legit jumped out of my seat. Seriously did not see it coming.

When it's revealed at the end of The Wizard of Oz that Uncle Henry had a similar experience to Dorothy's. Who saw that coming?!

And Then There Were None (1945) / René Clair. Nothing can match the surprise of Agatha Christie’s masterful novel. Some knock points off this film version (the first) because it has dark comedy elements, but it is by far the best – and this assessment includes last year’s BBC miniseries.

D.O.A. (1950) / Rudolph Maté. Edmund O’Brien is an ordinary working guy who goes to San Francisco to work out some personal problems. While there he is given a slow-acting poison and learns he will die. Why would anyone want to kill a nobody like him? He only has hours to solve the mystery of his own murder. Great film noir that is infused with a sense of doom. Powerful.

Witness for the Prosecution (1957) / Billy Wilder. Another thumbs up for another movie version of another great Agatha Christie mystery creation.

The Sixth Sense (1999) / M. Night Shyamalan. Got to also reaffirm this quiet supernatural thriller. All those people who claim to have known it from the beginning are probably mis-remembering history.

Murder on the Orient Express (1974) / Sidney Lumet. Guess who? Agatha Christie, again. Albert Finney puts on heavy make-up to pass for the super-detective Hercule Poirot. A marvelous all-star supporting cast. Thrilling revelation scene. A new film of this novel is coming in ’17 directed by Kenneth Branaugh who also plays Poirot. I’m keeping my expectations low but am willing to be won over.

Deep Red - my favorite giallo and best surprise.

Sixth Sense - agree with others. Definitely caught me by surprise at the time I saw it.

A Tale Of Two Sisters - saw it before anyone ruined it for me or seeing any other movies with a similar twist, so this movie completely caught me off guard. One of my favorite horrors.

The Usual Suspects - loved that twist so much.

Kill List - more recent film I've seen that the twist at the end messed me up.
