Critically acclaimed movies that you just don't like

For me it's Inception. That movie has seen tons of praise in the form of reviews and is highly ranked on this site but I believe I gave it a 5/10. What are some movies that are critically acclaimed that you just didn't like?

I didn't particularly like Inception either. To further pigeonhole my taste in movies, I didn't care for Forrest Gump, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Seven, or The Prestige.

The instrument has yet to be invented that can measure my indifference to that remark.

Can't finish Forrest Gump. I also thought Wolf of Wall Street was trash, and I still don't like Leonardo DiCaprio.

reply

Oh yeah, I also agree with you there, Movie_Riggs, I hated Wolf of Wall Street.

5.0 is a respectable score from me. It means I found the film worth watching once (but probably not a further time). I watch more 5.0s than any other score, and I only watch what I expect to like (either because of the director and/or writer or because of favorable reviews).

Here are a few of my disappointments with their current IMDb rating in bold and my grumpy rating in italics.

Wonderland (1999) 7.2 Twice failed to get past the 30 min mark. 1.0

Bobby Deerfield (1977) 5.9 Never a fan of Pacino but main problem here was Marthe Keller's impassable accent. Sydney Pollack is usually competent, but all at sea trying to mimic a European "existentialist" drama. 1.0

Love Among the Ruins (1975) 8.1 I can well imagine anyone under 40 would soon lose patience with this stagy saga of mothballed old fogies, but I am 76 myself and was bored stiff. Did manage to finish it, though, so I rate it a 2.0

Branded to Kill (1967) (The Criterion Collection) 7.4 Kindest to say I just did not get it. 2.0

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) 7.2 Ferrell, Willard, Rogen ... what was I thinking? 2.0

Zero Effect (1998) 7.0 A film has to be really poor when the repulsive Ben Stiller is not the worst thing about it. 3.0

Noises Off ...(1992) 7.5 A talented director and a brillant writer came up with this lumbering attempt at French bedroom farce. 3.0

Where the Wild Things Are (2009) 6.8 I love Jonze's "Adaptation" but adults and children alike found this tedious 3.0

Strange Days (1995) 7.2 Bizarre misconception of what the Millenium would look like (it was only five years ahead), from the world's most overrated director. Plus a hopelessly miscast Ralph Fiennes. Just cannot see him as seedy street-trash. 3.0

The Last Kiss (2001) 7.0 Nothing specifically wrong with it but what was the point? The definition of "bland". If the Italian original was this lame, I dread to think what the American remake was like. 3.0

The Fisher King (1991) 7.6 Attention-seeker Robin Williams at his most cloying. I just felt sorry for Jeff Bridges. Now there is a real actor! 3.0

An Affair to Remember (1957) 7.6 That they do not make them like this any more is some compensation for surviving into the age of Trump and rap music. 3.0

Identification of a Woman (1982) 6.8 (Criterion Collection) Like unconnected ideas and characters from five of Antonioni's aborted projects randomly stitched together. I think it was something to do with the search for the perfect woman but, if so, none of the dreary contenders here got off first base. 3.0

Citizen Kane. It's so perfect it's just no fun to watch. I was very bored by it, even though I recognized how brilliant it was in pretty much every aspect. 7/10 for me.

Forrest Gump - just don't like it.

Breakfast in Tiffany's - of all the lovely Audrey Hepburn's films, this is the only one I just do not enjoy.

Titanic - more than 1,500 people died and they make it into a love story with a couple idiotically posing at the bow of the ship. As repulsive as if they'd make a soppy romance out of 9/11.

The Godfather (every part) - I didn't get it back then, still don't. Tried to re-watch it lately, thinking maybe there was something to it that had escaped me before, but it still doesn't appeal. Actually, was so bored by the thing that I gave up before the end of the first film.

And tim-xy, they did make a soppy romance out of 9/11, it's called Remember Me and it's terrible.

5.0 is below the 5.5 median of the 1-10 scale. It would be the median of the 0-10 scale, if a 0 rating were available.
