2001: A Space Odyssey

This is a spinoff from a discussion under the topic "Most Important (not fav) Movies of the 1960s"---- but I think it deserves its own thread.

Is anybody willing to argue that 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is one of the-- if not "THE"--- most important films of the 1960s?

If so, please give me a few sentences or a bullet-list of reasons. It had more impact on me than any other film of the decade, but I am trying to decide whether what I saw in it was just personal favoritism or whether it really was important in larger, influential, or culturally reflective ways.

Thanks!

Hi, Chason_S,

Yes, a beautiful man, and I've always sought him out in any other movies.

But there was something so perfect about his face for this particular film. Something hauntingly beautiful, artful. Is it a mildness, an innocence?

It's the greatest movie of all time, imho.

OP have you seen Kubrick's Odyssey II: Beyond the Infinite Secrets Hidden in the Films of Stanley Kubrick - Jay Weidner. It wasn't until I saw this that I could say I fully agree with you.

Well, it did revive Richard Strauss's 1896 "Also Sprach Zarathustra", and there was still more in 1973 when electronic peformer Eumir Deodato had a 5 minute single and 9 minute LP cut of the tune, and that was just the fanfare!!(Kind of how Paul Whiteman and George Gershwin's 1924 Rhapsody in Blue is generally known only for its main riff which comes much later.)
