Obscure 80s tv show (Solved)

All I remember is that it was a family sitcom from the 80s or possibly early 90s. The episode was about the teenage boy in the family not being able to dance. Not much info I know but, any ideas?

reply

Family Matters had someone called Urkel who did an odd dance.

reply

Wasn´t Family Matters. lol

The "boy can't dance" plot is so common it could have been used in a number of shows. Do you remember any other details? Such as:
• Was it a two-parent family, or a single parent raising kids?
• Did the family live in a house or an apartment? In a downtown or suburban area?
• Did the boy have siblings? Younger or older? Sisters and/or brothers?
• Why is he learning to dance? Was he invited to a party or is it a dance competition? Or is he trying to impress his girlfriend?

Any extra detail could help. Even things like what night the show aired or what other programs were being shown at the time.

I'm assuming you live in the U.S. Here are a couple of rather lengthy lists of American sitcoms. Maybe a title will jog your memory.

I don´t remember the family dynamic. The teenage son had long hair and I believe he was going to a school dance or something and wanted to learn so he wouldn´t embarrass himself.
I have been perusing the 80s sitcom list and still haven´t found it yet. The show was American, even though I saw it in Australia, I remember seeing it in the late 90s but it was obviously from the mid to late 80s. It had that classic yellow and black font you see for the credits on those 80s shows. I know it wasn´t a big name show like Family Ties or Growing Pains because I would have recognized it immediately. None of the actors appeared to be famous as far as I am aware. It seemed like a show similar to Step by Step, a family sitcom but from an earlier time period and less well known.
I believe there were siblings but this episode centred on the teenage boy in the family.

reply

I almost suggested Step by Step but that was a 90s show rather than the 80s.

reply

I could not find it on that list fwiw. It was very likely a short lived show that got cancelled early.

reply

Sorry the list didn't help. Maybe someone will recognize it and you'll get your answer.

reply

I just thought of something. If you saw this in Australia it may have been a Canadian sitcom. There are lists of these, not as lengthy as the two in my original post:

reply

Nope not there. Im positive it was American.

reply

It may have been the Hogan Family, an episode from 1988 has the exact same plot as the one I remember.

reply

Maybe "Growing Pains" or "The Hogan Family"?

reply

Neither.

reply

It may have been the Hogan Family. I believe there is an episode from 1988 with an identical plot to the one I remembered. Edit: I found the episode and you were right. I qm surprised I didn't know who Jason Bateman was at the time.

reply

I hope so Billy.

reply

Yep. It was. Good guess.

reply

"Spencer" w/Chad Lowe?

"Mr. Belvedere"? THe oldest son had a goofy mullet (long hair)

reply

It was neither of those. The teenage son did indeed have a wavey mullet though. I appreciate your efforts though.

reply

I believe you're referring to Day by Day starring Christopher Barnes

reply

I thought it might have been day by day but it was definitely The Hogan family.

reply

Oh, okay. Glad you found it.

reply
