A mini-series/serial, took place in Latin America?

Hey, so it's a longshot I'll ever find out what this is, but I might as well try.

I watched a miniseries in 6th grade (so around 2006-2007ish) in my Geography class that took place in Latin America. I assume it was made for kids my age, as it stared a male protagonist who would have been around 12. There was a girl as well who was about his age, though I think it was a friend, not a sister. His father or uncle, or some adult figure, was also there.

I don't remember a lot about it, since it's been so long. One of the episodes (it was maybe more like an old serial than a mini-series) ended with the kid being poisoned, but getting better somehow in the next episode. I know the last episode ended in a dark cove, involving speedboats, and maybe a smuggler who was working for the main antagonist, who was a woman. There were portions that took place in the jungle, and that's where he got poisoned, probably around half-way to three-fourths through.

As for technical details, even though it took place in what I assume was Latin America (though I suppose it could have been in South America proper), it was in English. It would have had to have been from the early 90's to 2007ish, though I suppose it could have been from the 80's, maybe. I personally get the feeling it was from the early to mid-2000's, but I'm of course not sure.

Honestly, that's all I can say about it. Like I said, I have little hope of this working, but I thought it's better to try, so yeah. Any ideas would be appreciated, and I'll try to answer and recollect anything you need, but I think I listed everything I can remember. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.
