Small town/family drama about a girl

I have vague memories from it. Probably from the 90s or late 80s, about a young woman, quite eccentric, a bit on the angry side. She lives with her parents and comes home one day to find her mother disappeared. I recall her father asking: "Do you think there is another man? -How could there be, she never goes anywhere!"
It was probably small town Americana and it seemed a bit indie. I don't remember any of the actors.

This sounds familiar, but can you elaborate on more scenes?

reply

Sadly no, but she may have had some kind of argument with somebody (a guy?) in the opening scene. To show the audience her eccentricity.

Well, if your timeline is late 80s/early 90s there were only a handful of actresses around who were making both A-list and Indie-type of movies that played eccentric but empathetic characters. Some who come to mind are Lily Taylor, Wynona Ryder, Mary Stuart Masterson, Jennifer Connolly, Diane Lane, Uma Thurman, Emily Lloyd, and Laura Dern.

It still seems like there could be quite a few :-) But that might be a good way to look, that's true..
