Old movie, between 1930-1970. perhaps black and White?
A man and a woman is planning to kill (or already had?) the wife of that same man. The wife was going on a planned trip with train and The woman took her place and was to pretend that She was the wife. She weared the wifes clothes and luggage and got on the train. She had a hat of the wifes that would cover her face. They wanted everyone to see her leave, that was really important. The luggage was going to her Mothers place, i Think.
Also a fake letter was sent to the man from the wife, it was not from the wife but they wanted it to look like it was from her. Something happened and She, the woman, raised suspicion among some passengers on the train somehow i think. She was not the real wife and someone Who knew the wife was on to her, i Think.
The investigation of the missing wife started, and soon the man was suspected having a finger in her disappearence.
Could it by any chance be "They Won't Believe Me" (1947), a film noir with Robert Young and Susan Hayward? I haven't seen it, but the plot synopsis on Wikipedia seems quite similar to yours, right down to the fake letter.
I have searched through the imdb page in every genre that could fit, between the rating of 6.0 to 9.0 (I usually wont watch a movie with lower score); crime, thriller, mystery, noir. I have searched by key words and scrolled through list after list after list.
Getting kind of confused.. Maybe i made it up? Dreamt it? Maybe I fused together pieces of different movies in my memory and made up a new one, my own?
Hopefully I will keep on looking and one day finally find it. I Think I will appreciate it more now, after all this search, even though I probably liked it back then. It will probably be different from what I remember though.
Again, very welcome. I know it can be quite frustrating when one cannot find "your" movie and that it leads you to think "maybe I dreamt it!" which is possible but not, I think, likely. I say that because I had a similar experience on the old, now sadly-gone IMDb Boards. Everyone was saying, "Salzmank, you dreamt it!" or some such thing, or that I was conflating two or three different movies. Well, it took a great deal of research, but I eventually found the movie--and my memories were correct. It was just that the movie was extremely low-budget and not well-known in the least. (It was called "Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour," by the way.)
I should let you know that someone on that board recommended the pilot episode of "Columbo," called "Prescription: Murder" as your movie. He said the only differences were that it was in color and took place on a plane rather than a train. When I pointed out that your memories were of its being in B&W, someone else chimed in to say that there was a prior (B&W) TV episode of it, without the Columbo character, under the title "Enough Rope," in 1960.
I don't think it's your movie, but I thought I might as well let you know.
Awesome that you found yours!
Did you like it, or was it a let down?
Memories can sometimes make things greater than they are/were.
I have come across that columbo movie a few times While searching, and allthough its not the one I am looking for I actually did write it down on my "like to watch"-list, because of its likeness to it.
Not even the B&W version, without the Columbo character?
To be perfectly honest with ya (sorry about this!), "Sarah Landon" was absolutely atrocious when I finally got around to watching it again. It wasn't "disappointing," though, because I expected it to be bad, I remembered it being bad, I just wanted to know what it was called because it seemed so rare that no one had ever heard of it (pretty much true, actually).
On the other hand, I was searching for ages for a little '40s b-movie in which the butler character says, "The phone don't phone!" I finally found that, too--another one where people said, "We can't find it, you probably dreamt it or are conflating two different movies"--and it was quite enjoyable. So... In other words, don't give up hope! ;)
I'll let the folks on the other forum know it's not the Columbo episode.
No, it cant be that one either. I am certain it was on a train, not an airplane.
Okey, I know what you mean. Sometimes just finding that lost movie of yours is a reward enough. At least you no longer have to carry it in your head all the time and Wonder.
Oh, but I forgot the most important point I'd read there!
Someone else thinks he's seen the movie too, or at least remembers the plot. He thinks it was a film noir, as I suggested. He suggested that you look up keywords at IMDb, but he hasn't responded since I told him that you've already done that.
Yes I have time, just been a crazy two weeks or so, but I have read your messages :)
Nice to know that someone recognize the movie. That means it do exist!
I have searched and watched a few movies with a similar plot as the one I am looking for, but neither one of them was the one.
I have now had a week without filmwatching, which is kind of Weird for me. I have a list of movies Who need to be viewed.
I have seen "too late for tears " and it is not it. I will allthough read into it or speed through it just to be sure. Thanks.
You mentioned the movie "enough rope" earlier, and allthough it is not the one I am looking for I learned that I do want to see it. Too bad I could not find a place to stream it ;/
I dont Think it is "the two mrs carolls", but it is on my list and I will some day check it out. But it is not on 'top priority'.
Last few months I have seen a great deal of noirs and mysteries.
I love a good murder mystery but sometimes i just need a break from it all and see something else, like a comedy or a movie that I have already seen. I am a sucker for old movies and have watched a big deal of movies the last years. This time though I write them all down, just to be sure. It is really annoying to know that you have seen a movie you cant remember the name of, and cant find anywhere, no mather how hard you try. You know what I mean ;)
OK, good to know. I completely understand about having a crazy week! Real life comes first, of course! :)
Funny that it's so difficult to find. Unfortunately, nobody on that website has told me anything more about it.
Thanks for your kind words, by the way. Much appreciated. And I absolutely understand what you mean about not being able to find it--it is infuriating.
Thanks for your reply! I do not Think it is the columbo movie though ;/ but i will watch it anyway just to be sure, because several People have actually suggested that movie.
The list on tvtropes did not include my movie.
But thanks anyway :)
UPDATE :
I must say that I have really searched for this one. And as a fan of noirs and the mystery/crime genre I have already watched a lot of films and should be able to find it. So it is Weird that I cant.
I have tried keywords and gone through list after list on imdb, I have also searched by genre and by year ect.
I have a break in my search right now and have been watching films in other genres.
