Long shot. Name this hippie themed comedy.

A scene from a movie popped into my head the other day and it is driving me to distraction. I don't remember the name of the movie, the names of any of the actors, etc. Not even the year. I want to say 70s/80s/90s. Talk about narrowing it down.

Just this one recollection of this actress saying one line towards the end of the movie (the very last scene???)

She is thin, long white/blonde hair, crooked smile, and plays an ex-hippie who has been basically living in deprivation in the hills/mountains carrying on the hippie tradition (no running water, no modern appliances, etc). Meanwhile the others in the movie have been living a more modern life while pretending whenever with her to be maintaining the hippie lifestyle. I don't remember anything else about this movie.

In the last??? scene she says to the guy with her (who has not been maintaining the lifestyle) "Lately I find myself thinking about...washing machine. Does that make me a bad person?" Which is humorous to the audience and the guy in the scene with her.

I realize that is not much to go on, but if someone can pull this one out of a hat I would be extremely grateful.

Maybe one of these films:

The check is in the mail (1986)

Packin' it in (1983)

Lost in America (1985)

Thank you for those excellent suggestions. Unfortunately none of those.

Wish I could remember the name of the actress. That would go a long long ways. She had long stringy white/blond hair, crooked smile. Always played a shy mousy kinda girl. Played in a number of movies around the same time. Been randomly searching movie sites trying to blindly identify her. I'll know her when I see her. Was big around same time as Bernadette Peters (I think) but for the life of me cannot remember her name.

Not Lost In America, recently saw it.

It may be Rude Awakening (1989)
In the 1960s, two hippies go off into the jungle to evade the FBI. When they come back to New York in the 1980s, their fellow hippie friends have become rich yuppies.
Directors: David Greenwalt, Aaron Russo
Writers: Neil Levy (story), Neil Levy (screenplay) |

No idea what the film is, but going by your description of the actress, it sounds like Sondra Locke.

I think this is one of my favorite films - Flashback, with Keifer Sutherland and Dennis Hopper.

This is 100% what I was thinking. Carol cane even fits the description. Also...great movie.
