I WIN the prize for the MOST UNSOLVABLE thread in IMDb history!!!...

I saw this sometime between the years of 1984 and the spring of 93. Most-likely this was 1984 - 7. I believe it was probably brand-new when it aired on network US tv during prime-time. While it could have possibly been a theatrical production its values looked more like a tv production. I remember it having an ultramodern look and feel to it. I'm sure because of the vocoder that it was likely a science-fiction film and might or might not have also been post-apocalyptic. Again, I'm not sure if the chase scene is or isn't from the same feature.

Two people are being interrogated by a group of people who are all dressed-up and disguised in black and red outfits with hoods and masks. The interrogation scene was done in a dark circular metallic room as I recall. Their leader speaks into a microphone that disguises his voice by using an old vintage classic analog hardware vocoder which makes his voice sound similar to the Cylon Centurions from the original Battlestar Galactica.

There may or may not also have been a scene involving a pickup being chased by (a) motorcycle/s, or a motorcycle being chased by a pickup. There's a roadway mountain tunnel entrance in this scene.

Here are the so far discarded answers:

First of all try to remember the exact year or 2-year period you saw that movie. Place it in your lifeline with respect to an important event in your life: e.g. if you graduated in 1987 was it before or after that event? Etc.

Also it's funny you remember SO WELL the vocoder (technical term!) and focus on that.... how can you be so sure? It could have been something else. What event in your life informed you of the existence of vocoders?

My guess is that it's most probably an 80s movie or tv episode: Star man ?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088172/

Here's a list

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?colors=color&genres=sci_fi&languages=en&release_date=1981,1987&title_type=feature,tv_movie,tv_series&page=1&ref_=adv_prv

526 titles but I'm sure the number is much smaller (it can't be an animation).

I KNOW it's a vocoder because I happen to own one (Roland SVC-350 Vocoder) and it sounds JUST like one (such as the EMS Vocoder 2000 used for the Cylon Centurions in 'Battlestar Galactica'; the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201 used by Mr. Neil Young for his 'Trans' album; either of the Bode 7702 Vocoder or the Moog 16-Channel 327A MBVO Vocoder; a Synton Syntovox Vocoder: 202, 222, 221 or SPX-216; the Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus, Mk1 or Mk2; or the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder). It DOESN'T sound like any other type of voice-changer. The film or tv-film, tv-series episode, tv miniseries, tv special, tv pilot would've been first shown on tv (or at the theatre) no earlier than 1976 and shown on tv no later than April 1993. I believe it to MOST-LIKELY to be between 1983-6.

reply

"My guess is that it's most probably an 80s movie or tv episode" YES, I believe it's PROBABLY MOST-LIKELY SO.

No, it's NOT Starman (1984) NOR its tv-series.

http://imdb.com/search/title?colors=color&genres=sci_fi&languages=en&release_date=1981,1987&title_type=feature,tv_movie,tv_series&page=1&ref_=adv_prv < THANKS for this list!!! I'll go through it later...

"526 titles but I'm sure the number is much smaller (it can't be an animation)." NO, NOT animation. Live-action.

I've never seen the entire movie, but have you ever heard of "The Apple" (1980). It's a musical fantasy (like Xanadu) but it's set in the future of 1994 so there's a quasi-futuristic Sci-Fi thing going on.

How about "The Last Starfighter"? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfZcwHT0Bnw

Another movie I vaguely remember from either 1977 or 1978 was Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band featuring The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton sorta playing the Beatles' roles. I have no clue what the movie was about but I remember there being robots with vocoder voices in it.

Could it be Buckaroo Banzai https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086856/?

reply

No, I've seen that. Thanks for your reply though.
