Very Old Cult B&W Movie

For some reason I keep thinking it was called "The Thing" but an earlier version than the 1982 flick with Kurt Russell.

It was definitely from the 50's or 60's and all I can remember is this mushroom-type ball that bounced around (not as big as the ball in The Prisoner which was a TV series). I also remember an upright vacuum cleaner and a woman screaming as this weird shape was chasing her appliance! I was very young and was disallowed from seeing it further on TV but it has bugged me for years on and off because I am a fan of Hitchcock and The Twilight Zone et al.

I just don't recall the name or where to start looking. Thanks cult fans and Merry Christmas in advance! 

Still not sure - don't recall that particular scene shown here (Might be but thank you so much for all the linkage).
